Monday Night Football Blackburn v Wigan
05/05/2012
Steve Kean out. Steve Kean out. Have been the cries seemingly all season. But he’s still there. He’s still in. Despite a supporter led campaign to oust the under-siege Scotsman.
Blackburn have had an awful season thanks in part to that supporter led campaign. But the chicken farmer owners, the Venkys, must accept their share of responsibility for neglecting to invest in the team and bolster the playing resources at the hands of the manager.
Blackburn must win against Wigan or be relegated. It looks an exceedingly tall order.
Swindon Town were given the Ronnie Radford award for giant killing in this season of FA Cup games. Wigan was the goliath that this particular David slew. But it’s all about perspective, because the giant killer of the Premier League has been none other than Wigan.
Arsenal and Man United have been added to the notches on Wigan’s bed post. They’ve won four of their last 6 games. Wigan have scored in their last nine games, that is the best current run in the league.
And to be fair to Wigan, against Blackburn they won’t need to employ their usual giant killing prowess. Blackburn sit second bottom of the table; and recent displays suggest it is a matter of when, not if, they will be relegated to the second tier of English football.
And if the lack of investment, and interest, from the Venkys continues; the future looks increasingly bleak for Blackburn.
The old football adage is one game at a time. And Blackburn will know if they beat Wigan on Monday night; there’s still a chance, no matter how slim.
