Mourinho ends return to England speculation with Real Madrid contract extension
20/05/2012
Jose Mourinho ends speculation about his return to England by signing a contract extension with Real Madrid to 2016.
His previous deal had the Portuguese tied to the club until 2014 but this extension confirms his commitment to the Spanish giants for years to come.
There was speculation that Mourinho would return to England - indeed he was spotted house-hunting earlier this year in London - either to his former club Chelsea, or Liverpool or even Manchester City.
With early feelers to Chelsea seemingly going nowhere and Roberto Mancini firmly installed at City, after the club’s first Premier League title; there were few options open for the Special One to return to these shores.
Mourinho’s first La Liga title has seen a sea-change in support for him at Madrid. Real were desperate to topple Barcelona from the top spot in Spanish football. With the league title Mourinho has been seen to do that he has, at least, started the process of regaining dominance in Spain.
Mourinho’s position is cemented at the club after the league title. He will wield more power than any manager in history within the fractious politics of Real Madrid.
The Special One is the only manager inhistory to have won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. Aswell as two Champions Leagues and several domestic cups.
Mourinho courts controversy wherever he goes. So while fans of controversy may be disappointed the Special One won’t be bringing his particular brand of disputatiousness to Britain, you can be sure he will fill the back pages for many years to come.
