The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass
One of the most prestigious events in golf, The Players Championship, begins on Thursday 10th of May. With all the best names in golf battling to become the champion this tournament could be one of the best this season.
The tournament is a normally structured stroke play event played over four rounds, with the total prize fund at 9.5 million dollars, making it one of the most highly sought after tournaments in golf. Although The Players Championship is such a big event in the world of golf it is not one of the “majors”.
The Players Championship is also well known for what could be the most recognizable par 3 in the golfing world, the 17thhole. Known as “the island green” this whole will either make or break the round for many golfers. The final 3 holes will prove to be a challenge to most competitors as these are designed to be the hardest 3 holes on the course at TPC Sawgrass.
In 2011, South Korean K.J Choi finished on -13 and after a play-off hole with David Toms left TPC Sawgrass victorious, with the much desired trophy and the winner’s cheque of $1.71 million. In the past, out of 24 events at The Players Championship, 13 of the winners have been from the USA. More importantly, there have been no winners from the British Isles since the tournament began. On the recent form of many British golfers, you wouldn’t bet against a Briton winning this year. The likes of Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald will all be in contention this year at the Championship.
However, with K.J Choi winning last year and becoming the first Asian golfer to win the Championship, many will be looking to follow in his footsteps and become the second Asian golfer to win there. The rise of golf as a sport in Asia has been phenomenal, with players vying for spots in the tournament.
The experts have chosen their top five picks for the Championship, and you should not bet against any one of these players winning. Luke Donald is the experts’ favourite to win, followed by American Hunter Mahan. Justin Rose and Lee Westwood are also at pick number 3 and 4 with the ever present Phil Mickelson at number 5. If I had to make a choice, Graeme McDowell seems like a wise pick, as last year’s leader at 54 holes, his 79 spoiled his chances of winning and there is no better way to put that round behind him than to win at TPC Sawgrass this week.
Overall, the standard of the course will be perfect, hopefully the weather will be perfect and there will be one competitor who plays perfectly and picks up The Players Championship title and the not too shabby $1.7 million prize for finishing 1st.
