The greatest season ever comes to a close
Sadly we must say good bye to the greatest Premier League season ever. The 2011/2012 season was just voted the greatest in the history of the Premier League. This was even before the most stunning conclusion to a title race ever. Sadly football fans must say goodbye to an unforgettable season.
City looked down and out in extra time on the final day. QPR led 2-1 and City’s hopes lay in tatters on the green turf of the Etihad, enter the most thrilling five minutes of extra time anyone is likely to witness.
At the 92 minute mark Edin Dzeko headed a goal from Silva’s corner to spark some hope in the hearts of the City faithful. To rouse to life a City team who saw their title slipping from their grasp.
Sometimes footballers repay every extortionate penny spent on them. Sergio Aguero cost City £35 million at the start of the season and City fans will think he’s worth every bit of that. He smashed a loose ball past Paddy kenny from 8 yards, on almost the last kick of the ball to pip their Manchester rivals to the title in the most dramatic fashion.
Manchester City looked so sunk that fans were seen leaving minutes before added time. Indeed it was an added time redolent of the famous Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer inspired United come over Bayern Munich in 1999.
United were given a taste of their own medicine.
Manchester City last won the title in 1968 and the legends of that season wandered the Ethad as shocked as anyone else by the feats of heroism they had witnessed. There is a new group of immortals in City light blue.
The talk will be of power shifts, of the birth of a dynasty. Maybe so, one thing is certain the Premier League cannot be matched for intrigue, drama and nail-biting excitement.
Bring on 2012/2013.
