Welsh college rugby matches will be broadcast
S4C will broadcast 16 rugby matches from the WRU College League Championship live and exclusive on the web in Wales and the rest of the UK this season, with repeats of all the matches to be broadcast as live on the TV channel.
Some of the best talents in Welsh Under-18 rugby will play in the Championship and viewers can follow the competition throughout the season to see if Coleg Gwent can retain their title.
Eight teams will compete this time, in the league’s third season, including newcomers Llandovery College - an educational establishment with a tradition of producing top international rugby players.
The other teams in the competition are Coleg Sir Gâr in Carmarthenshire, who lost to Gwent in last year’s Championship final, Coleg Morgannwg, Neath Port Talbot College, Bridgend College, Swansea College and Pembrokeshire College.
The coverage begins on Wednesday, 3 October, with Coleg Gwent v Coleg Morgannwg live on the website s4c.co.uk and shown later that evening on S4C. The following Wednesday, 10 October will see newcomers Llandovery take on Neath/Port Talbot College, live on the website in the afternoon and as live on TV in the evening.
Wyn Gruffydd will be the match commentator and he will be joined in the commentary box by Gwyn Jones among others. The coverage will be produced by Sports Media Services.
Players such as George North and Scott Williams - who developed through the 16+ college system – will be among the contributors during the season.
S4C began broadcasting college rugby – Rygbi’r Colegau – at the end of last season and it was warmly received by rugby fans.
Geraint Rowlands, S4C’s Head of Broadcasting and Sports and Events Commissioner said, "We are looking forward to working closely with the Welsh Rugby Union to give rugby at this level the platform it deserves. We have had a great response to our broadcasts in the spring. The coverage reached a new, young audience on-line while also delighting our traditional rugby audience in Wales and the UK."
Producer Russell Isaac of Sports Media Services said, "In New Zealand and South Africa, rugby at the 16+ college level is seen as key to the development of young rugby players. In Wales, the 16+ college is growing and developing all the time and our programmes will reflect the buzz and excitement of the league. Some of these players should form part of the Wales squad for the IRB World Junior Championship, the Welsh regions and even the national squad one day. What is certain is that there will be plenty of talent, buzz and excitement in the coverage."
