About BWF World Championships

The BWF World Championships are an individual tournament consisting of five events - men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.  Countries from around the world are invited to enter their players through the world ranking qualification system.

The World Championships were first held in 1977 in Sweden and quickly grew into being regarded as a top-flight global competition. The All England Championships had previously been seen as the unofficial world championships, while the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup also offered men's and women's national teams an opportunity to show the world which nations were on top of their game.

Danish shuttlers dominated the inaugural tournament, taking three of the five titles on offer, with Lene Køppen achieving the remarkable feat of winning gold in both singles and doubles. In 1980 in Jakarta, it was hosts Indonesia's turn to impress as they landed four out of five golds.

When China entered the fold in 1983, however, the Asian powerhouse demonstrated a thirst for success that has yet to be quenched taking gold in the women's singles and doubles and they now lead four of the five medals tables, being second only to Indonesia in the men's doubles category.

Ahead of the 2017 edition of the tournament the Chinese had amassed a grand total of 167 medals (61 gold, 42 silver, 64 bronze), 96 more than nearest rivals Indonesia and 107 more than third placed Denmark.

They have on a number of occasions swept all five gold medals at the competition such as in 2011 when the legendary Lin Dan won his fifth men's singles title to equal the record of Korea's Park Joo Bong.

The World Championships were at first held every three years but after its third edition in 1983 became a biennial event. The 2006 IBF World Championships in Madrid marked the first time the Worlds had been held in consecutive years and since then it has become a near annual affair, only making way for the Olympic Games every fourth summer.
