About Dubai World Superseries Finals

Bringing together the fastest racquet sport in the world and one of its most spectacular cities has been a marriage made in heaven for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as the Dubai World Superseries Finals has massively increased the profile of the game.

The season ending showpiece moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2014 after being held in alternating cities as authorities in Dubai aggressively continue to promote the city as ideal host for major sporting events. The Superseries Finals joins the likes major tournaments such as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai Rugby 7s and the Dubai Darts Masters, to name but a few, for example.

The prize money on offer is noteworthy and is only matched by the BCA Indonesia Open, a BWF World Superseries Premier event.

Only the top eight players or doubles team in the Superseries rankings after the final tournament of the season, as announced by the Badminton World Federation, qualify for the tournament. However, that is restricted to only two entries per member association.

The tournament structure sees eight players or pairs divided into two pools of four, with the top two players or pairs in each group progressing to the semi-finals.

Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei won the inaugural men's singles title in 2008 and went on to successfully defend his title on two occasions. The former World No. 1 won his fourth and last Superseries Finals in 2013 and to date holds the record for most titles won in the competition.

Badminton's 'Beckham', Lin Dan, won his only title in 2011, whilst Denmark's Viktor Axelsen became the first European to claim the men's crown when he took home gold in 2016.

China has dominated the women's singles, meanwhile, with Li Xuerui (2), Wang Yihan and Wang Yihan all successful. Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei took top honours in 2016.

England's Chris and Gabrielle Adcock won the mixed doubles competition in Dubai in 2015.
