After winning the Korea Open in Seoul last week, Sindhu will be in confident mood at the $325,000 tournament in the Japanese capital.

The fourth seed begins her quest for glory against World No. 19 Minatsu Mitani of Japan in the opening round of the women’s singles event on Tuesday.

The Hyderabadi shuttler could well face Nozomi Okuhara in the second round if she overcomes the 26-year-old Mitani.

Former world No.1 Saina Nehwal has returned to action after recovering from a thigh strain and having missed the Korea Open. She beat Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-17, 21-9 in her opener.

England's Chris and Gabby Adcock, meanwhile, were looking to bounce back from a disappointing showing at last week's VICTOR Korea Open in Japan but once again suffered an early exit as they were beaten in the first round on Tuesday by Lee Yang and Hsu Ya Ching of Chinese Taipei.

The third seeds had beaten Yang and Hsu in straight games at the YONEX Sunrise India Open earlier this year.

The Adcocks were ousted in the second round in Seoul by Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See.
