The Brazilians qualified for this competition by finishing runner-up to Venezuela in last year's South American Championship in Caracas. New head coach Cesar Guidetti has yet to finalize his final 12-man line-up but among the familiar names in the list are Rafael Hettsheimeir, Joao Paulo Batista, Rafael de Souza and Leonardo Mendl. Also listed is Toronto Raptors forward Bruno Caboclo.

Colombia, meanwhile, is making its first ever appearance in this competition. Head coach Guillermo Moreno has assembled a roster made up of domestic league stars and several US NCAA players. Expected to lead the squad are Stalin Ortiz and Michaell Jackson, the team's top two scorers in last year's South American Championship where they placed fifth overall.

Veteran point guard Rodrigo Caicedo is also expected to deliver along with center Jhon Hernandez. Current NCAA players Braian Angola Rodas (Florida State), Tonny Trocha-Morelos (Texas A&M) also made the preliminary squad along with Hanner Mosquera-Perea, who recently finished his college playing days at East Tennessee State.

Brazil and Colombia played a tune-up game in Salta prior to the FIBA AmeriCup with the Brazilians posting a 72-58 victory.
