The Women's African Basketball Championship or Afrobasket was first played in Guinea in 1966 with the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria) emerging as champion. The now defunct state regained its title two years later in Cairo. Madagascar upset UAR in the 1970 final to secure its first and only Afrobasket title.

Senegal won its first Afrobasket crown in 1974 and has since racked up 11 titles to become the most successful nation in this competition. They are also the defending champions.

Zaire (now DR Congo) had its glory years in the 1980s and 1990s while Angola, Mali and Nigeria shared the spoils in the last decade.
