Format and Current Teams


The FIBA AmeriCup will feature a total of 12 teams. Group A will take place in Medellín and will feature hosts Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Group B will be held in Bahía Blanca with host Argentina, defending champions Venezuela, Canada and the US Virgin Islands taking part. Montevideo is the site of Group C that will feature hosts Uruguay, the United States, the Dominican Republic and Panama.

The three group winners along with hosts Argentina will advance to the semifinals, which will take place at the Orfeo Superdomo in Cordoba. The semifinal winners will clash in the gold medal match, while the losers will fight for the bronze medal.

Unlike in previous editions, the FIBA AmeriCup no longer serves as a qualifying event for the Olympic or FIBA World Cup.

The continental competition previously known as the Tournament of Americas and FIBA Americas Championship was first held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1980 with the host nation emerging as the champion. The Puerto Ricans and Brazilians split the first four editions of the tournament before the famed United States Dream Team featuring a bunch of NBA superstars won the first of their record six titles in Portland in 1992.
