Format and Current Teams


This is the first edition of the FIBA Asia Women's Cup that includes Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand. A total of eight teams will compete in the elite Division A (Level I) while another eight nations will take part in Division B (Level II).  

Competing in Group A of Division A are China, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand and North Korea while featuring in Group B are defending champion Japan, Australia, South Korea and the Philippines.

The teams will play their groupmates once for a total of three games each. All four teams in each group will proceed to the crossover quarterfinals and their rankings will be based on their win-loss records. The top-ranked team in Group A will play the fourth-ranked team in Group B, A2 will face B3, A3 will battle B2 and A4 will lock horns with B1.

The semifinalists will qualify for next year's FIBA Women's World Cup in Spain.

History


The FIBA Asia Women's Cup was first played in Seoul in 1965 with the host nation emerging as the champion. The South Koreans went on to win four of the next five stagings of the continental tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the Olympics and FIBA Women's World Cup. 

South Korea holds the record for most titles with 12 followed by China with 11. Japan is the only other country that has won this competition with three titles. Starting this year, Australia and New Zealand will take part in the competition after FIBA decided to merge the Asia and Oceania zones.
