History

The European Basketball Championship or Eurobasket was first played in 1935 in Geneva with Latvia emerging as the champion after beating Spain in the final. The Soviet Union won its first title in 1947 and dominated the competition until the 1970s where it also enjoyed a rivalry with Yugoslavia. The Yugoslavs became the most dominant team in the region following the break up of the Soviet Union with Italy, Greece and Germany sharing the spoils.

Spain finally won its first Eurobasket title in 2009 and has won three of the last four editions of the continental tournament. They are also the defending champion.
