Hungary vs Spain Preview

Spain is expected to beat Hungary in their opening Group A duel in the Eurobasket Women at Zimni Stadion Hradec Kralove.

The Spaniards won this event in 1993 and 2013 and placed third two years ago in Budapest. They also finished runner-up to the United States in last year's Rio Olympics.

2015 Eurobasket top scorer and All-Star Team member Alba Torrens and WNBA veteran Marta Xargay are back to lead the Spaniards, who topped Group I of the qualifying tournament.

Head coach Lucas Mondelo also named Anna Cruz, Laura Nicholls, Laia Palau and naturalized center Sancho Lyttle to his final line-up. Lyttle did not see action in Rio due to injury. Other players in the squad are Silvia Dominguez, Laura Gil, Leonor Rodriguez, Leticia Romero and tournament debutantes Maria Conde and Beatriz Sanchez.

Hungary, meanwhile, is making its second-straight appearance in the tournament after ruling Group E of the qualifiers. Naturalized guard and WNBA mainstay Courtney Vandersloot is the team's top player. She is coming off an impressive stint with Yakin Dogu Universitesi whom she led to the Eurocup, Turkish League and Turkish Cup titles this season.

Vandersloot will get support from Tijana Krivacevic and Zsofia Fegyverneky, the team's top two scorers in the qualifiers. Head coach Stefan Svitek also named Zsofia Simon, Zsofia Licskai and the returning Nora Nagy-Bujdoso to his 12-man roster.

Also seeing action are Debora Dubei, Bernadett Hatar, Bernadett Horvath, Dora Medgyessy, Kristina Raksanyi and Zsofia Varga.

Spain and Hungary crossed paths in the 2015 Eurobasket with the Spaniards cruising to a 69-46 win in Sopron. Torrens had 18 points and 14 rebounds in that game.
