New Zealand vs China Preview

China and New Zealand clash in their opening Group A game in the FIBA Asia Women's Cup in Bangalore.

The Chinese are determined to win the tournament after finishing runner-up to Japan two years ago in Wuhan. Back to lead the Asian giants are Chen Xiaojia, Shao Ting, Sun Mengran and Gao Song, who all played in last year's Rio Olympics.

Other Rio veterans in Xu Limin's squad are Lu Wen, Huang Hongpin and Huang Sijing. Also competing in India are Li Meng, Zhao Shuang, Shi Xiufeng, Shen Yi and 18-year-old center Li Yueru.
China has won this competition 11 times but it hasn't tasted success winning back-to-back crowns in 2009 and 2011.

New Zealand, meanwhile, is taking part in this tournament for the first time after FIBA decided to merge the Asian and Oceania zones. The Tall Ferns are determined to do well after placing third in the recent William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei. They actually ended in a three-way tie with Japan and Chinese Taipei Blue in first place but had an inferior points difference.

Veterans Jillian Harmon and Micaela Cocks will lead New Zealand along with fellow Olympians Natalie Taylor and Antonia Edmonson-Farnworth. Head coach Kennedy Kereama also picked Chevannah Palvaast, Kalani Purcell, Deena Franklin, Erin Rooney and Josephine Stockhill, who all represented the country in last year's Olympic qualifiers. Completing the squad are Georgia Agnew, Jessica Bygate and Rebecca Ott.

The last meeting between China and New Zealand in a FIBA-sanctioned competition took place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where the hosts posted an 80-63 victory. The two teams also played each other in the Athens Games four years earlier with the Tall Ferns pulling off a 79-77 victory.
