Slovenia vs France Preview

France starts its title bid in Prague against Slovenia.

The two teams are in Group C along with defending champion Serbia and Greece. France finished runner-up in the last two editions of the Eurobasket so it's determined to bring home the title it last won in 2009.

Old reliables Isabelle Yacoubou and Sandrine Gruda are not playing so head coach Valerie Garnier will count on veteran playmaker Celine Dumerc, Olivia Epoupa and Endy Miyem to lead the squad in the Czech capital. Dumerc, who is retiring from international duties at the end of this tournament, missed last year's Rio Olympics due to an ankle injury.

Also making the final cut were Rio Olympians Valeriane Ayayi, Helena Ciak, Marine Joahnnes, Sarah Michel, Gaelle Skrela and Marielle Amant. Making their first appearance in the Eurobasket are Hhadydia Minte and Alexia Chartereau while Diandra Tchatchouang returns after missing out in Rio.

France, which placed fourth in Rio, qualified for the Eurobasket main draw after sweeping Group B of the qualification tournament.

Slovenia, meanwhile, is making its first ever appearance in this competition. They qualified after ruling Group A of the qualifiers.

Teja Oblak, Nika Baric and Sandra Pirsic will lead the Slovenians after emerging as the team's top scorers in the qualifying stage. Young center Eva Lisec also made the squad along with Rebeka Abramovic, Maja Erkic, Tina Jakovina, Larisa Ocvirk, Annamaria Prezelj, Tina Trebec and Ziva Zdolsek.

Head coach Damir Grgic boosted his team's winning chances by recruiting US-born forward Shante Evans as their naturalized player.
