Canada opens its Group B campaign in the FIBA AmeriCup in Bahía Blanca against the US Virgin Islands.

The Canadians have never won this competition and placed third two years ago in Mexico City. Tasked to lead the North Americans in their quest for an elusive title is recently appointed head coach Roy Rana.

Among the familiar names in the squad are NBA veterans Andrew Nicholson and Joel Anthony and Europe-based players Jermaine Anderson, Olivier Hanlan and Brady Heslip. Anthony and Heslip both took part in the FIBA World Olympic qualifiers in Manila last year while Anderson and Nicholson return after last playing for the country in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship in Venezuela.

Also making the final cut were Richard Amardi, Murphy Burnatowski, Junior Cadougan, Ammanuel Diressa, Grandy Graze, Dyshawn Pierre and Xavier Rathan-Mayes, who was recently signed by the New York Knicks.

The US Virgin Islands, meanwhile, qualified for this competition for the first time since 2009 after placing fifth in last year's Centrobasket in Panama City.

Several players from that squad return including top guns Walter Hodge, Khalid Hart and Ivan Aska. Also back are Justin Gray and Phillip Jones along with head coach Sam Mitchell.

Other members of the squad are Stephaun Adams, Angel Rivera, Cuthbert Victor, Deon Edwin, Jahmia Simmons, Johnathan Gray and Javier Martinez.

Canada defeated the US Virgin Islands 87-67 in their last meeting in this competition in 2009.  Back to Top
