This Group ‘A’ encounter will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham with both desperate to make a winning start to the tournament.

Match Preview

Australia always start an ICC tournament as one of the favorites and this year Champions Trophy is no exception. They enter the event as the only team to have won the Champions Trophy twice but not a single player of this squad is part of those wins. Still, their batting line-up boasting of David Warner, Steve Smith and Aaron Finch more than makes up for that absence.

Their bowling should be one of the most potent attacks in the entire tournament – Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson. All well then? Smith will have a lot riding on him and Warner, but beyond them the batting looks shallow. There still are question marks on their batting in English conditions, which throws up opportunities for opponents.

New Zealand have a strong record in this format and have an excellent squad to challenge Australia. Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor make an exciting batting line-up while Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Adam Milne are tailor-made for these conditions.

As is their tradition, the Kiwis have a clutch of bits-and-pieces players – in fact a lot of them, in James Neesham, Corey Anderson, Mitchell Santner and Colin de Grandhomme. However, will they be able to rise above the underdogs tag to be Champion material? That will be the biggest question for New Zealand ahead of this tournament.

Line-ups and Key Players

Aaron Finch should open with Warner while Moises Henriques may have edged ahead of other all-rounders after the practice matches. Key for the Aussies still will be Warner, Smith and Starc.

Luke Ronchi or Tom Latham? That is the biggest question for Williamson apart from choosing which of his all-rounders to go with. Key for the Kiwis are Guptill, Williamson and Southee.

Form & Stats

Australia won 25 of the 42 ODI matches played in the last two years. Their practice match against Pakistan was washed away but they scraped home by two-wickets against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand are not far behind the Aussies in the last two years winning 24 of the 43 matches played. In the last eight matches played between these sides, each has won four.

Warner and Guptill are two of the most successful batsmen in this format and this match could well turn out to be a battle of these openers.
