After a long time, England start as favourites in an ICC Champions Trophy. Post their 2015 World Cup debacle, the transformation of England started in the right earnest with Eoin Morgan at the helm.
Aggression is the mantra for this side that likes to put opposition on the mat from ball one. A line-up that has Joe Root, Morgan, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler surely has to be favourites for the title.
It is not as if they are without worries. Jason Roy and Alex Hales are an exciting pairing at the top but have been inconsistent. Roy’s form is a worry although Morgan has proclaimed his support for the opener. The absence of a sheet anchor is another worry although Bangladesh will not be as threatening as South Africa were in the warm-ups.
Make no mistake...this Bangladesh side is one of the best in their history. With players like Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim there is enough experience in this line-up to give jitters to any team. They truly deserve the accolades as their surge to sixth in the ICC ODI rankings indicate.
Bowling too makes exciting reading with Mustafizur Rahman, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib good enough to challenge any batting line-up. The worry though for Mortaza is the inconsistency as exhibited in the two practice matches.Back to Top
Line-ups and Key Players
After experimenting in the final ODI against South Africa, England will be back to full strength. Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali should take their designated places in the final XI.
Bowling continues to be a worry for Mortaza who may opt to bench Taskin Ahmed in favor of Rubel Hossain. Mehedi Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain should take care of spin duties.Back to Top
Form & Stats
England come on the back of a 2-1 win over South Africa – the series having served as perfect practice for the hosts. In the last year, England have won 17 of their 24 matches and scored 300 plus in 12 of those matches.
Bangladesh have improved vastly in the past two years or so although a win-loss record of 6-8 in the last 12 months does not make good reading.
The head-to-head record stands in England’s favour at 15-4 but one of those wins was at Adelaide in the 2015 World Cup. On this ground too, England have a positive record and have lost just two of their last 10 ODIs.Back to Top
