Match Preview

The clash for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy is sure to keep everyone glued to the action – both in The Oval stadium and outside of it.

India had a rather predictable journey so far. After starting the tournament with a big win over Pakistan, they got a rude awakening at the hands of Sri Lanka. It was business as usual against South Africa granting them a ticket to semis. Bangladesh in the semifinal were never a threat to their passage. The men-in-blue now stand on the cusp of victory in a tournament that they were so close to boycotting.

Pakistan on the other hand stayed true to their tradition by keeping their supporters on tenterhooks. After the reverse against India, they brushed aside South Africa and Sri Lanka to book a date with rampant hosts England. Just when everyone started dreaming of an England-India final, Pakistan came up with a clinical win. Dream crushers for some but Pakistan are by no means are an undeserving finalist.

Strengths

India definitely are superior with their batting thanks largely to the form of their top three – Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Bowling unit is no slouch either, with Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneswar Kumar and the spinners looking very strong.

Pakistan relied on their bowlers to lead their resurgence in the tournament. One final time in the tournament, they will hope that Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Junaid Khan will come good. The form of opener Fakhar Zaman is refreshingly positive while Babar Azam and Azhar Ali are coming good too.

Key Battles

Call it the genes, call it the grounds – India traditionally have produced brilliant batsmen while Pakistan have been churning bowlers like a factory. The destination of this trophy will depend on how the Indian openers fare against Pakistan bowlers.

Kohli and Sarfraz Ahmed have many similarities as captains. Both believe in leading from the front and in manufacturing winning sequences than waiting for one. Sarfraz erred in the group encounter where he lost a trick or two by not using Mohammad Hafeez. With stakes much higher now, both captains will hope to lead from the front once again.

Lineups

India found an unlikely bowling hero in Kedar Jadhav against Bangladesh but they may not want to tinker their winning combination. However, knowing Kohli’s propensity to take instinctive decisions, it will not be a surprise if Mohammad Shami comes in the place of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Amir should be fit once again to replace Rumman Raees. Sarfraz may think hard about including an additional seamer in place of Shadab Khan.

Stats

Pakistan hold the edge with 72-52 in 128 encounters although over the past few years, the matches have been limited to ICC tournaments. India have been utterly dominant when it comes to ICC tournaments with just two losses and eight wins in 10 matches across World Cups and Champions Trophy.
