Sunday, August 21 is the all important kick off date but the traditional season curtain raiser, the Supercopa de Espana, will take place on August 12 and 15. That encounter pits the winners of the previous season's Copa del Rey and La Liga.

The schedule coincides with the end of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but has not been universally welcomed as Sevilla may find themselves involved in Europa League play-off action on August 18 if they fail to win either the Copa del Rey or the Europa League and are forced to rely on their seventh placed finish in the table to book their place in Europe.

Sevilla have called for the Supercopa de Espana to be played on August 13 and 16 while Real Madrid want the fixtures to be rescheduled to August 14 and 17.

There will be no football played of the Christmas period next season with the winter break staring on December 23 and action returning on January 2, 2017.

"There won't be any football at Christmas because the agreement signed with the Spanish football association AFE says we will not play," LFP president Javier Tebas said.
