Aberdeen v Celtic Preview

No Scottish team has managed an unbeaten campaign since the late 19th century, but then 2016/17 Celtic squad are on the brink of writing their names in the record books in manager Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge.

The Hoops had been able to sleep-walk their way to the Scottish title in each of the four seasons that bitter rivals Rangers were out of the top tier, but that was not good enough to keep Ronny Deila in a job and former Liverpool boss Rodgers was named boss last summer. It was a bold move by the Glasgow giants, who were looking to spark new life into the team after an embarrassing cup defeat to their bitter rivals, and it has paid off in spectacular fashion.

The Scottish Premiership and League Cup trophies are already safe in the trophy cabinet, and in a couple of weeks’ time they will have a shot at completing the treble when they face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final. They could be forgiven for taking their foot off the gas between now and then, but they have plenty of incentive to keep their rampant form going because they are close to smashing the 100-point barrier in the Premiership and they are three games away from completing an unbeaten league campaign.

But if any team in Scotland can stop them, it is going to be the side that is clearly the second best in the country. However, Aberdeen are a massive 27 points behind Celtic heading into this match and their record against Rodgers’ men this season makes for dismal reading – four games played, four games lost. They were soundly beaten 3-0 in the League Cup Final last November and they have been outscored 9-1 in their four meetings so far.

Former Aston Villa frontman Scott Sinclair has enjoyed a fantastic first season in Scottish football and he goes into this match in outstanding goal-scoring form having netted seven goals in his last seven appearances for the Hoops. Sinclair found the back of the net when Celtic thrashed Aberdeen 4-1 last August and he can score against the Dons once again in this latest meeting.
