Algeria vs Togo

Togo lost to Morocco and DR Congo after starting with a creditable draw against holders Ivory Coast, while Algeria’s defensive frailties surfaced in a generally low-scoring competition as they drew 2-2 with both Zimbabwe and Senegal either side of a 2-1 defeat to Tunisia.

This duo are expected to be the front-runners in a qualifying pool that also contains Benin and Gambia as they try to win the group and gain a direct place in Cameroon, or alternatively finish among the three best of the 12 runners-up that will also go through.

As well as beginning this qualifying campaign, Algeria are also trying to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and will resume that process in late August. At present, it is not going well for the Fennecs because they are bottom of a very tough group in which Nigeria are in pole position to advance with a four-point lead over Cameroon.

Since their African Cup of Nations disappointment, Algeria have appointed Lucas Alcaraz, an experienced Spaniard, as their coach following his three spells with Granada and other stints with the likes of Almeria, Recreativo Huelva, Cordoba, Murcia and Racing Santander.

Alcaraz has omitted 10 of the 2017 AFCON squad from the current group but is still relying on the likes of England-based quartet Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani (Leicester City), Sofiane Feghouli (West Ham United) and Adiene Guedioura (Middlesbrough).

Togo still have their talisman Emmanuel Adebayor, who has scored six goals in 10 starts for Turkey’s second-placed club Istanbul Basaksehir since mid-March, plus Floyd Ayite who made a good impression for Fulham this term.

With Algeria at a low ebb just now, there could be some value in a small-stakes bet on Togo at a tasty price to pull off an upset.
