About The Bundesliga
The Bundesliga was established in 1962 by the German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund) with the first season of the new competition being held the following year. Prior to its formation, football was typically played at an amateur level in Germany where champions were determined through play-off matches between the winners of regional tournaments.
However, increased calls for more professionalism to be brought into the game in West Germany prompted the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) to act and invite teams from the North, South, West, South West and Berlin regions of the nation to form a 16-team professional league.
1. FC Koln were crowned champions at the end of the inaugural campaign and the Bundesliga has never looked back, growing in size and stature since, and now boasting the highest average stadium attendance worldwide.
The league has expanded to 18 teams and boasts a massive global audience with the popularity of leading clubs like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund adding to the glamour of the German top flight. It is broadcast in over 200 countries on the planet with the likes of Fox Sports, Fox International Channels, and Sky all acquiring rights in recent years.
FC Bayern Munich (24 titles), Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund (5), Werder Bremen (4), Hamburger SV and VfB Stuttgart (3), 1. FC Köln and FC Kaiserslautern (2), TSV 1860 Munich, Eintracht Braunschweig, 1. FC Nürnberg and VfL Wolfsburg (1) have all won this prestigious competition.
The Bundesliga operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the 2. Bundesliga, Germany's second tier since 1974. Seasons run from August to May with the top three finishers earning direct qualification to the group phase of the UEFA Champions League, whilst fourth place guarantees a berth the Champions League qualifiers and fifth and sixth gains entry in the UEFA Europa League.
Bayern Munich (5), Hamburg (1) and Borussia Dortmund (1) have all enjoyed success in Europe's premier club competition with Bayern joint third on the list of all-time winners.
The clubs that finish in the bottom two of the Bundesliga are automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, with the top two finishers in the second taking their place.
A third from bottom finish offers the chance of a top flight reprieve in a two-legged relegation play-off match with the third-place finished from the 2. Bundesliga. The winner of this do-or-die contest claims the final place in the following season's Bundesliga.
The league has produced an array of stars over the years with the likes of Gerd Muller, Franz Beckenbauer, Jurgen Klinsmann, Lothar Matthäus and Rudi Voller all becoming household names around the world.
The division has also provided a solid foundation for the German national team (as West Germany first and Germany after reunification) to win four World Cup Finals (1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014) and three UEFA European Championships (1972, 1980 and 1996).
Germany's top tier has been consistently ranked in the top three leagues in Europe according to UEFA's league coefficient ranking, based on performances in European competitions, in recent seasons.
