Nottingham Forest have taken one Premier League scalp in the Carabao Cup this season and are fancied to give Chelsea a fair test.

After winning 2-1 at home to Shrewsbury Town in the first round, Forest then went to Newcastle United and came through 3-2 at the end of extra time. Scottish striker Jason Cummings scored twice around the half-hour mark and Des Walker’s son Tyler provided the winner.

It will, of course, be much more difficult for Mark Warburton’s side away to the English champions, but they have produced some good performances this term against useful opposition and notched up a notable trio of victories against all three big North East clubs.

Much will depend, of course, on how seriously Chelsea manager Antonio Conte takes this tie considering it is sandwiched in between tricky Premier League games at home to Arsenal and away to Stoke, while there is also the important Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid next week.

In fairness to Conte, he did name strong line-ups for all three matches the Blues played in this competition last season, but they did not impress as they squeezed past Bristol Rovers at home, needed extra time to get the better of Leicester and then bowed out against West Ham.

The latter result, a 2-1 defeat, was in the middle of Chelsea’s brilliant 13-match winning streak in the Premier League and immediately after their 4-0 home win against Manchester United, so it’s possible that the focus on this less prestigious trophy was lower than for the bigger prize.

We are not prepared to bet on Forest to cause a shock here, but this may be a more awkward assignment for Chelsea than it appears to be on the face of it and so backing the Championship side to lose by no more than one goal at the very worst appeals as a solid bet.
