About Coupe de France

The Coupe de France, or Coupe Charles Simon to give it its official tile, is France’s premier club cup competition and is organised by the French Football Federation. The French Cup is name after Charles Simon, a sportsman who whilst serving his nation in WWI. The tournament was first hosted in the 1917-18 season and is open to all amateur and professional football clubs in France. The openess of the tournament allows for massive participation and in 2013-14, for example, a phenomenal 7,656 clubs entered the competition.Olympique de Marseille's French forward Bafetimbi Gomis celebrates after scoring (Photo by BORIS HORVAT/AFP/Getty Images)6x5x4x3x

The French Cup final is played at the Stade de France in Paris each May and the winner earns a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

Olympique de Pantin were the inauguaral winners of the prestigious competition, defeating FC Lyon 3–0 at the Stade de la Légion Saint-Michel in Paris in front of 2,000 fans in 1918. In 1919 the final attracted 10,000 supporters on moving to the Parc des Princes where CASG Paris beat Olympique de Paris 3–2.

Similar to cup competitions across Europe, the Coupe de France is a knockout tournament with opponents for each round drawn at random. Ties are played in a single leg and if a match ends in a draw, there is extra time and subsequently a penalty shootout if the extra 30 minutes does not separate the sides.

Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille boast a record of 10 Coupe de France title wins apiece, whilst L’OM have made the most final appearances (18).

Olympique de Marseille vs Paris Saint-GermainMarseille and PSG are the two most successful clubs in France's premier club cup competition, however, despite the competition being a century old, the capital club did not win their maiden title until 1982. Conversely, it took Les Olympiens just four seasons to claim their first cup triumph in 1924 but they haven't tasted success in the tournament since 1989.

Since then, Paris have won the Charles Simon Cup on no less than eight occasions to draw level with their bitter rivals. To rub salt in the wound, they Saint-Germain beat Marseille in two of those finals (2006 & 2016). Indeed, OM have lost their last four deciders (1991, 2006, 2007, 2016) and lost set to be over taken by Paris for the first time in the Coupe de France winners list.

Les Phocéens can take some comfort from the fact that they still lead Les Parisiens by 10 to six in terms of Ligue 1 title victories.
