Real Madrid travel to Vitoria-Gasteiz to face struggling Alaves in an unexpected predicament at this early stage of the league campaign. After just five rounds of fixtures the capital club and defending champions trail bitter rivals FC Barcelona by seven points in the top flight table and can ill afford any more slip ups lest they wish to face the ire of their notoriously impatient fans.

A 1-0 loss at home to Real Betis in midweek was the latest setback for the European champions in their title defence and those lost points come on the back of home draws against Valencia (2-2) and Levante (1-1) at the end of August and start of September.

Those results mean Los Blancos have yet to win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the league this term and that will come as a major surprise to most as Madrid are usually at their scintillating best at the famous stadium.

A facile 3-0 win over APOEL and 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the Basque Country prior to the Betis defeat had given the impression that Zinedine Zidane and co. had steady the ship following a brief dip in form, however, Antonio Sanabria's 94th-minute winner on Wednesday, which secured the away side's first win at the Bernabeu in 19 years, will have done little for team confidence.

The result ended Real's all-time Spanish record of scoring in 73 successive games.

Zidane's charges were guilty of wasting a plethora of chances in a game that they dominated for large spells, producing 27 efforts on goal to no avail, and perhaps the Frenchman will happy to be on the road this weekend as Real look to regroup and improve on their current seventh place in the standings.

Cristiano Ronaldo was one of several players at fault in missing gilt edged opportunities for Madrid against Betis on his return from a five-game ban and on his first La Liga appearance of the season.

Expect the Portuguese to make amends against last season's Copa del Rey finalists this weekend though.

Real Madrid have scored three or more goals in all of their last seven head-to-head encounters against Alaves and bagged seven convincing wins in the process, while Alaves have just one win over the rivals in 14 games played so far.

The hosts have lost five straight in the Primera Division this term and come the final whistle on Saturday afternoon that will be six.
