About La Liga

La Liga, also known as the Primera Division, is the top professional division in the Spanish football league. It consists of 20 teams, with the top six sides at the end of the campaign qualifying for Europe and the three lowest ranked teams relegated to the Segunda División and replaced by the top two teams in that division plus the winner of a play-off.

The top four in La Liga earn tickets to the UEFA Champions League, whilst fifth and sixth enter the Europa League draw.

Only nine teams have been crowned champions of the Spanish top flight since the league's inception, with Real Madrid winning the title a record 32 times and Barcelona trailing them by nine on 23. Los Blancos dominated the division from the 1950s through to the 1980s. However, since the 90s, Barca have challenged that hegemony, with Atlético Madrid, Valencia, and Deportivo de La Coruña breaking the big two's duopoly on occasion.

Barcelona won the very first Liga in 1929 before Madrid registered success in 1932 and 1933. Basque side Athletic Bilbao, though, were the early dominant force winning the Primera División in 1930, 1931, 1934 and 1936. They were also runners-up in 1932 and 1933.

Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Real Betis are the other sides to have tasted success in the Spanish top tier.

About El Clasico

The Classic is a football match like no other as it pits Catalonia’s finest against their bitter Castilian rivals in what can often be title deciding encounters and always intensely competitive affairs.

This contest is steeped in history and second only to the UEFA Champions League Final in terms of worldwide popularity. A veritable who's who of football's elite have graced the game with the likes of Di Stefano, Puskas, Cruyff, Maradona, Butragueno, Laudrup, Suker, Raul, Zidane, Rivaldo, Romario, Koeman, Guardiola, Stoichkov, Hagi, Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldhino and Messi all having played in the prestigious match.

Consequently Barca and Real have become two of the wealthiest clubs in the world today and are undoubtedly two of the best supported teams around the globe.

The first meeting between the clubs was way back on May 13, 1902, in the semi-final of the Copa de la Coronacion, a friendly tournament which later became the Copa del Rey.

Played at the Hipodromo in Madrid, it was Barca who claimed victory with founder Joan Gamper on target along with team mate Steinberg who scored two. Madrid's sole response came from Arthur Johnson.

There has been no shortage of classic encounters between the clubs since then with over 225 official matches played.
