About The Copa Libertadores

The CONMEBOL Libertadores is an annual continental club competition organized by Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL), one of FIFA's six confederations. Hosted since 1960, the tournament is named in honour of the main leaders of South America's wars of independence (Libertadores means liberators in Spanish and Portuguese).

As with many of its counterparts around the globe, the Copa Libertadores has seen various formats during its lifetime. In its current guise, the tournament consists of six stages starting with three qualifying rounds that are held in January and February.

The sides that overcome that test take their place in the group stages of the competition (eight groups of four teams) alongside clubs who automatically qualified for the group phase. From there, eight group winners and eight runners-up progress to the knockout stage of the cup.

The Copa Libertadores final is usually played in the summer months with the winner booking a place at the FIFA Club World Cup and the Recopa Sudamericana.

Argentina's Independiente are the most successful club in the history of the tournament, having won it on no less than seven occasions. Argentine clubs boast 24 wins in total compared to Brazil's 18 and Uruguay's eight.

The trophy has been won by 24 different clubs with 13 of those having claimed the title as South American champions more than once.
