About Real Madrid

Madrid Football Club, the predecessor of Real Madrid, was formed in 1902 by a Board headed by Juan Padrós and as a sign of things to come, they didn't have to wait long for success winning four of the first six editions of the Copa de España.

In the 1920s the club became internationally recognised, embarking on a number of foreign tours with their reputation further boosted by Spain's silver medal win at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp.

Los Blancos were beaten to the first La Liga title by arch rivals FC Barcelona in 1929 and had to wait until 1932 to open their account. That followed the arrival of Ricardo Zamora, Ciriaco and Quincoces, who formed what was regarded as the best defence in the world. They helped to add a second league title in 1933 and two Copa successes.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War prevented Real from establishing themselves as an early dominant force and they had to wait 20 years for their third La Liga crown in 1953, in a decade that saw their rivalry with Barca emerge with gusto. Spain's big two shared seven titles between them in the 50s.

The 1960s saw Real Madrid come into their own with the team winning five European Cups in a row led by the legendary Alfredo di Stefano. They also won eight league titles in the 60s including five in row from 1961 to 1965.

Six La Liga crowns followed in the 1970s, a decade that saw Real mourn legendary club president Santiago Bernabeu, who passed away on the 2nd of June 1978.

Bernabeu was the club's President for 35 years, between September 1943 and June 1978, and lends his name to their famous stadium in Madrid.

Another six league titles were won in the 1980s, an era that saw Emilio Butragueño made famous along with the likes of Pardeza, Sanchís, Míchel, Martín Vázquez and Sánchez.

In his seven seasons in white Hugo Sánchez scored 251 goals, and was the division's top goalscorer in four of them.

Jorge Valdano, Fabio Capello and Vicente del Bosque were the noteworthy names in the 1990s. These three coaches took Real Madrid to the top in La Liga and in Europe, aided by the likes of Redondo, Laudrup, Seedorf, Suker, Mijatovic and Roberto Carlos.

Three league titles were added to their La Liga tally and yet another UEFA Champions League crown.

From 2001 to 2010 Real Madrid won its Ninth European Cup and third Intercontinental Cup as well as five Ligas, among other titles.

The arrival of 'Galácticos' Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham, and later Cristiano Ronaldo, saw Madrid become even more of a worldwide phenomenon as they expanded their global following to unprecedented levels.

In 2014 the Whites became the first club to win 10 European Cups beating city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra-time in the decider. They added an 11th title in 2016, again beating Atletico, this time on penalties after the sides finished level at 1-1 following additional time.
