Manchester United v Burton Albion live stream: Man Utd to avoid repeat of Albion embarrassment

Brendan O'Neill 18 Sep 2017
  • Burton Albion held Manchester United to a goalless draw when they last visited Old Trafford
  • The last time these two teams met Manchester United romped to a 5-0 victory in an FA Cup replay
  • Manchester United are the holders of the EFL Cup having beaten Southampton in last season’s final
  • Burton Albion have never managed to reach the fourth round of the English League Cup

Burton Albion held Manchester United to a goalless draw when they last visited Old Trafford – but can history repeat itself or could they even go one better by knocking out the Red Devils?

Manchester United made hard work of it the last time these two clubs went head-to-head in a cup competition. It was back in the 2005/06 season – when Burton Albion were still a non-league side – that these two clubs were paired together in the third round of the FA Cup, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s ‘weakened team’ were embarrassed as they were held to a goalless draw at Old Trafford, before finally romping to a 5-0 victory in the replay.

Much has changed since then. United have endured some disappointing seasons post-Fergie, but they appear to be on the up once again with Jose Mourinho at the reins. The Portuguese led the Manchester club to glory in this competition and the Europa League last season, and they have made a strong start to their 2017/18 Premier League campaign by rattling in the goals and racking up the points.

Burton, meanwhile, are no longer plying their trade in non-league football. Since that remarkable draw at Old Trafford they have established themselves as a Football League team and have enjoyed an incredible rise all the way up to the Championship. They managed to fend off relegation from the second tier last season – a remarkable achievement when you consider the size of the club – and despite the recent thrashing at Leeds United they have made a decent start to this season too. Albion have already ousted Cardiff City in this competition, but can they top that here?

My answer is no. Manager Jose Mourinho will almost certainly ring the changes to his starting Xi with this match coming just days after a big Premier League clash with Everton and only days before they head to Southampton. They may be the holders, but this competition is low priority as United fight for the title and compete in the Champions League. However, Mourinho does have a remarkable record in the EFL Cup, having never lost a tie in 90 minutes, and even a weakened side should have more than enough about it to oust Albion in fairly straightforward fashion.

And if you are looking to back a goalscorer than I suggest backing either Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford. Mourinho will almost certainly rest Romelu Lukaku on Wednesday night and that should result in at least one of the two starting at Old Trafford. Both men have got among the goals early on this season and a meeting with a Championship side is a good opportunity for them to add to their account. For this bet I recommend maybe waiting until the team line-ups are confirmed around an hour before kick-off, although Mourinho’s starting XI on Sunday could give us a big hint.
