Middlesbrough relegation is 'lowest point' in captain's career

Middlesbrough Captain Ben Gibson has described the club's relegation to the Championship as the lowest point in his life so far.

Boro's relegation was confirmed with a whimper as they lost 3-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It means they cannot get themselves out of the bottom three, even with two games remaining this season.

It's certainly been a difficult campaign for the team, who have struggled for goals throughout. They've also had problems adapting to life on the road and Gibson wasn't pulling any punches as he assessed the 2016-2017 campaign.

Speaking after the defeat to Chelsea, Gibson said: "After the highs of last season, to be honest we've wasted an opportunity to play in the best league in the world. We have to reflect and try to put it right.

"The Chairman and those fans, they deserve Premier League football. People say he's the best chairman in the country and our fans were singing until the end there."

Another man keen to talk about the Middlesbrough fans was Chelsea boss Antonio Conte. He was impressed with their constant support despite struggling and admits this is something unique to the English game.

The Italian said: "Only in England you can see this support. I've not seen it before," said the Italian, who is managing in his first season in England.

"It's great to see a team fight with all of their strength. They went down and the supporters stayed there.

"This must be an example for other countries. For this reason, I felt in my heart I should go and clap the Boro support."

As for the next step for Middlesbrough, they need to confirm who will be their manager next season, with current boss Steve Agnew uncertain over his position.
