About Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer began life in 1996 and kicked off with much fan fare as the 10 founding clubs in the elite division – five teams each in both the Eastern and Western Conferences – ushered in a new era for professional football in the United States.

Former US international Eric Wynalda made history by scoring the first goal in league history on April 6, with an 88th-minute winner in San Jose Clash’s fixture with D.C. United and the league has never looked back.

The MLS has since grown in size and stature, and now boasts 22 member clubs as well as having attracted more world class talent in recent years such as former Real Madrid star Kaka and former FC Barcelona striker David Villa.

The 2017 season saw two new franchises enter the fray with Atlanta United and Minnesota United expanding the league to a record number of clubs.

Of the 22 clubs in the MLS, 19 of those are in the U.S. and three in Canada. The MLS regular season runs from March to October, with each team playing 34 games and the side with the best regular season record winning the Supporters' Shield.

The post-season is where the battle for the most sought after silverware - the MLS Cup - heats up though, with twelve teams competing in the MLS Cup Playoffs through November and December. The play-offs culminate in the championship game, the MLS Cup.

MLS teams also participate in domestic competitions against teams from lower divisions in the U.S. Open Cup and in the Canadian Championship.

The winner of the Eastern Conference, Western Conference, MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup also qualify for continental competition in the form of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Designated Players

2007 was the year that Major League Soccer introduced the Designated Player Rule to further raise the level of the game in North America by bringing international stars into the league. It was of course the season that former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham made his high profile move to LA Galaxy. Beckham went on to win the MLS Cup (2011, 2012) and Supporters' Shield (2010, 2011), scoring 18 goals in 98 appearances for the club.

The ex-England international also paved the way for other big name moves to the league with the likes of Republic of Ireland all-time leading goalscorer Robbie Keane joining him at the Galaxy, while Thierry Henry finished his career at New York Red Bulls, which was also the destination of World Cup winner David Villa after he left Atletico Madrid.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire) and Juan Pablo Ángel (New York Red Bulls), were also successful Designated Players who made major contributions to their clubs.
