Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United have not met since February 26, 2012 in a crucial League One encounter that The Owls edged thanks to a solitary Chris O'Grady strike and that ultimately saw Wednesday overhaul their city rivals and secure promotion to the Championship, leaving the Blades toiling in England's third tier until they eventually secured promotion last term.

Sunday's encounter at Hillsborough has been a long time coming, then, and with both sides of the city having enjoyed a good start to the campaign the game is eagerly anticipated by fans and neutrals alike.

The Blades come into the clash sitting in sixth place but could actually have topped the Championship table with victory over Norwich City last weekend, while the Owls are three places and two points behind them in ninth.

United had won three on the bounce before their narrow 1-0 loss at home to Norwich as Wednesday made it four games unbeaten with 1-1 draw at Cardiff City.

That's an impressive run of form The Owls given the fact that they are without key man Fernando Forestieri who will miss around three months after requiring surgery on a knee injury.

Wednesday defender Tom Lees, meanwhile, is relishing the prospect of playing in his first Steel City derby.

“I’m looking forward to it. It (the derby) is all people have been talking about ever since the end of last season," he told The Star.
“It is one of those games where the league table is forgotten about for 90 minutes.
“I don’t think we can get caught up in it too much because we have the important end goal.
“It will be an important three points for us to add to our total and what we want to achieve."

The Owls hope to be challenging for an automatic promotion spot this term after coming up short in the play-offs in each of the last two campaigns but those ambitions will not concern United on Sunday afternoon.
