FINAL4 Preview

With reigning champions Vive Targi Kielce failing to make the grade and reach the VELUX EHF FINAL4 this time around, after being eliminated by Montpellier in the last 16, four sides will be looking to succeed them as title holders with the semi-final line-up seeing Paris Saint-Germain Handball take on Telekom Vezprem and HC Vardar facing FC Barcelona Lassa for a place in Sunday’s final.

Surprisingly, no German club will be participating at the climax of the competition in 2017, which is a first for the format.

Barcelona come into the FINAL4 brimming with confidence after completing their fourth domestic league campaign in a row without defeat - a phenomenal achievenment. And with a record nine European Cup/EHF Champions League successes to their name, they will be many people's favourites to claim the crown given the extent of their big stage experience.

Indeed, Barca will be the only previous winners at the Lanxess, having won the FINAL4 on eight occasions. Although, they looked on their way out of the competition at the quarter final stage when facing German powerhouse THW Kiel. The Catalans lost the first leg of that contest 28:26 but turned the tie around with a 23:18 second leg victory to progress.

PSG and Veszprem are returning finalists with high scoring Paris beating MOL-Pick Szeged 60:57 on aggregate in the last eight to secure their place at the showpiece, whilst Veszprem won both of their legs against Montpellier HB to secure a 56:48 aggregate triumph.

This is the fourth season in a row that the Hungarian club has made it to Cologne, but they will be concerned with PSG's impressive +79 goal difference after 18 matches in this season's competition.
