Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi could be jailed for up to 22 month is found guilty of tax fraud in Spain.

The 28-year-old Argentina international and his father could stand trial after being accused of defrauding the Spanish Authorities of nearly £3.5 million between 2007 and 2009.

Lawyers acting on behalf of the tax authorities want both Messi and his father Jorge to be jailed for 22 months with them claiming Jorge avoided paying tax on his son’s earnings by using offshore accounts in Belize.

Lionel Messi has always maintained his innocence, but in June a high court ruled that Messi should not be granted impunity for not being aware of what his father was doing.

Messi and his father paid the Spanish authorities a 'corrective payment' of £3.7m after they were formally charged in June 2013.

No date has been set for the trial.
