Melbourne Storm v Gold Coast Titans Preview

On the surface, Melbourne taking a home game to Suncorp Stadium should be a blessing for the Titans, who now basically get to enjoy an extra home game.

However Melbourne love playing at Suncorp, winning 11 of their last 12 games at the venue, while the Titans have won just three times in 18 visits to the iconic stadium.

Add in the fact that Melbourne are clear premiership pacesetters and have won nine of their last 11 games against the Titans, and this is suddenly becomes the steepest of uphill battles for Neil Henry’s troops.

It comes as no surprise that off-field drama has overshadowed much of the talk surrounding this showdown, with Kiwi stars Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor missing from the Storm and Titans teams after being caught up in a drugs scandal following last Friday’s Test in Canberra.

Craig Bellamy would have been absolutely filthy with New Zealand captain Bromwich, especially considering Melbourne are already without two forwards in Christian Welch (ACL) and Nelson Asofa-Solomona (hand) for this clash.

The Titans meanwhile will field one of their strongest teams of the season despite the absence of Proctor, with Jarryd Hayne again named in the centres.

Gold Coast have been playing well recently, beating defending premiers Cronulla away from home and thumping the Knights, but facing the Storm is a whole different ball game. With Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith still operating at the peak of their powers, combined with their excellent record at Suncorp, I don’t think you can tip against them, although I’m backing the Titans to keep this close.
