Wayne Bennett returns to Newcastle to face the club that are still attempting to recover from his up-and-down three-year stint in the Hunter.

Newcastle were left in financial turmoil and have been forced into blooding their next generation of players well ahead of time, with most of the blame directed towards Bennett and the state he left the club in so he could plot an immediate return to the Broncos.

It’s safe to say the Knights haven’t recovered since, with the club picking up consecutive wooden spoons and never looking likely to consistently challenge most other sides in the competition.

But that could provide Newcastle with the spark and intensity needed to ambush Brisbane on Saturday - none more so than electric winger Nathan Ross, who was told he would never be a first grade player while Bennett was at Newcastle.

However, on the flip side, the Knights have a dismal record against the Broncos and have experienced a disappointing last few weeks, putting in their worst performance of the season to lose at home against fellow battlers the Tigers, while they suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Bulldogs at Belmore last week.

Brisbane have their own reasons to fire on Saturday - a big win could see them jump into the top four, with the Broncos currently trailing fourth-placed Manly by 19 in points differential.

And really, all bad blood aside, this should be a comfortable victory for the Broncos, who have remained solid all season and haven’t really lost to those below them. It would take a miracle performance from the Knights to prevail so back the Broncos home by a big margin.Back to Top
