Penrith Panthers v New Zealand Warriors Preview

With a dismal 2-7 record on the season after nine rounds, the Penrith Panthers - premiership favourites at the start of the season - are now almost in must-win territory as we approach the beginning of the Origin period.

Nobody really knows what’s gone wrong at the foot of the mountains this season, but we can assume the pressure and expectation may have gotten the better of some of the young players, while marquee forwards Trent Merrin and James Tamou haven’t lived up to their reputations as of yet.

It’s quite bizarre that a team filled with the talent Penrith is blessed with are languishing in 15th spot on the ladder, just two points above the embattled Knights, but that’s exactly the case, with the Panthers trailing their 11-placed opponents by four points heading into Round 10.

The Warriors have been their typical inconsistent selves throughout the opening 10 rounds of 2017, but there has been some cause for optimism in their last two games, with the Kiwi club pushing Melbourne all the way on ANZAC Day and beating the Roosters by one point at home.

However the Warriors have struggled on the road this season, losing all four games across the ditch, meaning this is a prime opportunity for Penrith to generate some momentum.

Many of the Warriors side are also licking their wounds after copping a pummelling from Australia in last Friday’s Test match, but whether that has an affect on them remains to be seen.

All in all, this is a National Rugby League match Penrith can’t afford to lose. They need to keep pace with the top eight and are playing at home against an erratic side that hasn’t won on the road all season. Surely the Panthers return to the winners circle on Saturday.
