About Handball

Modern handball was born during the 1st World War in Germany although there were many variations of the game in the preceding decades across Europe. In 1915 a physical education teacher, Bachmann Hermann, created a new game that was played by hands called Torball, played on a field that spanned 20x40 meters with goals that stood at 2x2.5 meters and a goal-area that comprised 4-meter semi circle.

The International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF) was founded in 1928 and thanks to their efforts, the sport was included at the Berlin Olympic Games in Germany in 1936. It gained international recognition as a consequence with teams from five countries in Europe and a team from the United States of America participating at the event.

Handball went from strength to strength since then and in 1946 the International Handball Federation (IHF) was formed  as the administrative and controlling body for international team handball. The IHF now boasts 204 national member federations.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) is the governing body for European handball. Founded in November 1991, it is made up of 50 member federations and two associated federations (England and Scotland).

Its competitions include the European Men's Handball Championship and European Women's Handball Championship as well as prestigious club competitions like the EHF Champions League and EHF Cup.
