The Houston Astros are just five wins away from clinching the American League West title and the magic number will be reduced if they again beat division rivals Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

Justin Verlander pitched eight solid innings while Yuli Gurriel drove in the game's only run in the second inning to lead the Astros to a 1-0 win in the opening of their three-game series on Tuesday. Verlander gave up only one hit and one walk and struck out nine as he earned his 12th win of the season.

Mike Fiers (8-9) is hoping to duplicate his feat when he starts for the injured Lance McCullers Jr in this game. The right-hander had a one-inning relief appearance in their 8-9 win loss at Oakland last Friday where he gave up two hits and two runs.

The Angels will field left-hander Tyler Skaggs (1-5), who has lost his last four decisions. He gave up six hits and three runs and struck out nine in their 1-3 loss at Oakland last Wednesday.
