Snooker's origins are certainly unconventional with the sport coming into existence in the late 1800s thanks to the experimentation of a young officer in the British Army on a billiard table in an officers' mess in India. The game has come a long way since those humble origins with the 2015 World Championship boasting a top prize of £300,000 and watched by nearly half a billion people around the globe.
Snooker grew in popularity in the later half of the 19th century and the early 20th century and by 1927 the first World Snooker Championship was organised by Joe Davis, who transitioned the game into the professional age. Davis won every world championship until 1946 when he retired.
The sport experienced a decline in the 1950s and 60s but enjoyed a resurgence in 1969, when David Attenborough commissioned the snooker tournament Pot Black to demonstrate the potential of colour television. It was felt the green baize and multi-coloured balls were ideal for showcasing the advantages of colour broadcasting.
The TV series was a major ratings success and interest in snooker increased to such an extent that the 1978 World Championship was fully televised. And more recently, under the guidance of Barry Hearn after he gained a controlling interest in World Snooker Ltd in 2010, the sport has gone from strength to strength with an increase in the number of tournaments and in the size of prize funds globally.
