About Internazionali BNL d’Italia

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is one of three Masters 1000 events on the ATP World Tour played on clay and follows the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain. Hosted at the Foro Italico in Rome in the second week of May, it is a Premier 5 event on the WTA Tour.Andy Murray poses with his trophy after winning the men's final match against Serbia's Novak Djokovic (Photo by TIZIANA FABI/AFP/Getty Images)

Also known as the Italian Open, Rome Masters and the Italian Championships, the tournament is renowned as one of the most glamorous stopovers on both the men's and women's tours.

The inaugural Italian tennis championship was held in 1930 in Milan at the Tennis Club Milano and won by Bill Tilden and Lilí de Álvarez.

There were no tournaments held between 1936 and 1949, however, the competition resumed in 1950.

In 1990 it became an ATP Championship Series Single Week tournament.

'King of Clay' Rafael Nadal has won a record seven titles in Rome on his favoured surface, although Scot Andy Murray claimed an unexpected championship win in 2016 with victory over nemesis Novak Djokovic in the final.

Murray displayed an increasing level of comfort on clay as he clinched his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown on what has long been regarded as his weakest surface.

The women's singles competition has been dominated by Maria Sharapova (2011, 2012 & 2015) and Serena Williams (2013, 2014 & 2016) in recent years with six titles between them.

Sharapova missed the 2016 tournament after receiving a 15-month ban for testing positive for meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.

America's Chris Evert won a record five women's titles in Rome during her illustrious career.
