About US OpenThe US Open is the last of four Grand Slams on the tennis calendar each year and held in Flushing, N.Y. in August and September. Originally an exclusively men's singles and doubles tournament starting in 1881, it has evolved into a two week sports extravaganza for both the men's and women's tours and attracts over 700,000 fans through its gates at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center annually.
In 2017 the prize money on offer for the US Open rose to $50.4 million, making it the richest purse in tennis history. A phenomenal $3.7 million of that goes to the men's and women's champions.
The list of former champions reads like a who's who of tennis greats with the likes of Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all claiming the men's singles title, while Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams have all been successful in the women's singles.
Swiss ace Roger Federer famously won five titles in a row in New York from 2004-2008 surpassing the great Ivan Lendl's three in a row from 1985-1987 and John McEnroe's three on the bounce from 1979-1981.
