Since the inaugural edition of the prestigious tournament in 1993, Japan has proudly hosted every edition of the quadrennial event, which features six teams per gender with the host nation welcoming four continental winners from Asia, Europe, NORCECA and South America, and one wild card entry.
Brazil topped the podium at the previous edition in 2013 and for the third consecutive time with four wins and just one defeat as they edged out Russia by 12 points to 11.
The Olympic-winning South American team will once again be the star attraction in Nagoya and Osaka, especially as they have claimed four of the six World Grand Champions Cup titles in the tournament's history.
And given the nation continues to produce players of the calibre of Ricardo Lucarelli, Mauricio Borges and Lucas Saatkamp, it's little wonder. The aforementioned quartet will be under the guidance of new coach Renan Dal Zotto, who'll also be eager to bolster his standing in the game.
USA, France, Italy and Iran complete the field and their be plenty of interest in how Les Bleus perform in Asia at their maiden FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. France won the FIVB Volleyball World League in stunning fashion earlier this year and will be determined to upset Brazil, the team they defeated in the World League final.
They boast a formidable squad indeed, with captain Benjamin Toniutti and Kevin Le Roux, Earvin Ngapeth, Kevin Tillie, Julien Lyneel and Stephen Boyer all set to thrill.
