Japan is again out to impress its fans at the Kamei Arena Sendai on Saturday when it battles Serbia in Pool D1 of the FIVB World Grand Prix Intercontinental Round.
The Asian giants opened Week 2 with a 25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19 victory over Thailand on Friday. Risa Shinnabe fired 20 points while Sarina Koga added 18 to lead the Japanese to their second win over their continental rivals this season. Mai Okumura added 12 points while Haruyo Shimamura chipped in nine.
Japan improved to 3-1 in the team standings with seven points.
Sebia, meanwhile, is determined to bounce back after being swept by defending champion Brazil 24-26, 17-25, 22-25 on Friday. Ana Bjelica paced the Balkan powerhouse with 15 points while Brankica Mihajlovic added 11.
The Serbians, who swept the Brazilians in Week 1, suffered their first defeat and lost the top spot in the overall standings. They remain with nine points.
"There is a big difference between Japan and Serbia, their respective styles of volleyball, especially if we speak of attackers, we definitely have stronger attackers because of our height and our blocking," Serbia head coach Zoran Terzic told fivb.org. "Japan plays better defense and cover, and they never give up. We definitely need to learn from Japan in how they play in those elements."
