Group A

Hosts Azerbaijan are competing at their seventh consecutive Women's EuroVolley tournament and are joined in Group A by Germany, Poland and Hungary. The co-hosts will look to superstars such as Natalya Mammadova, Odina Bayramova and Polina Rahimova to help them to win their first-ever European medal and improve upon the fourth place finish achieved by the nation's previous golden generation back in 2005 in Croatia.

Germany, meanwhile, are the second most successful nation in the competition behind Russia, with two gold and six silver medals to their name, while Poland also boast impressive pedigree in the tournament thanks to gold medal triumphs in 2003 and 2005 and a bronze medal finish in 2009. Hungary finished 12 at the biennial event two years ago.

Group B

Co-hosts Georgia are making their EuroVolley debut and have been drawn alongside one of the favourites for a podium finish in the form of Italy. The Azzurre have taken a young team to Georgia and Azerbaijan, but scoring powerhouse Paola Egonu will be determined to see her team vie for another medal after they finished second at the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals in China this year. Belarus and Croatia complete the group.

Group C

Group C is comprised of Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria and Ukraine and all eyes will be on the Russians given their superb history at this tournament. With 19 gold medals from 29 editions of the women’s European Championship, Russia stands head and shoulders above the competition. They have won six golds since the dissolution of the Soviet Union and are two-time defending champions. The Russians are now bidding for their second EuroVolley treble having achieved that remarkable feat from 1997-2001. Such has been Russia's prowess over the years that they have only failed to make a podium finish on three occasions in the competition's history.

Bulgaria are the only other nation in the group to have tasted EuroVolley success - way back in 1981 when they defeated the Soviet Union in the final. Turkey and Ukraine have both achieved podium finishes at the event, however, with the former claiming silver in 2003 and bronze in 2011 and the latter taking bronze in 1993.

Group D

2015 silver medallists The Netherlands and Rio 2016 Olympic silver medal winners Serbia have been drawn together in Group D along with Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Serbia are looking to improve on the bronze medal they secured two years ago in the Netherlands and star middle blocker and team captain Milena Rašić is expected to be one of the top performers at the tournament.

The Vafikbank Istanbul ace and Team Serbia finished third earlier this summer at the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals in China.
